Politicians and observers of the digital assets market have expressed confusion of Pakistan’s crypto policy, after the central bank reversed its longstanding opposition to the sector.

On May 30, in what domestic media described as “another U-turn” on crypto, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) said virtual assets were legal. The central bank said that although it had previously advised regulated entities to “avoid dealing in virtual assets” in 2018, this was because of the lack of any legal and
