  • Innovative emissions reduction trial: Importers through DP World UK ports earn carbon inset certificates for reducing supply chain emissions.
  • Potential for significant impact: A 50% participation rate could replace 11,000 tonnes of fossil fuel, cutting 10,000 tonnes of CO₂.
  • Certified, non-transferable credits: Inset credits, verified by Bureau Veritas, are issued quarterly and tied directly to carbon savings.

DP World UK has unveiled a Carbon Inset Programme Trial aimed at helping importers lower hard-to-abate Scope 3 emissions from containerized supply chains. Running from January 1 to June 30, 2025, the trial offers a 50 kg CO₂e inset certificate per import-laden container moved through DP World UK’s ports at Southampton and London Gateway.

How It Works

Carbon insets are generated through Unifeeder’s GreenBox platform, which tracks the use of lower-carbon marine fuels across Unifeeder’s Northern European container vessel network. Credits are certified via the Smart Freight Centre methodology and validated by Bureau Veritas.

Customers automatically receive these independently certified credits at no extra cost, funded through the existing Energy Transition Contribution.

Substantial Carbon Reductions

DP World projects that if 50% of import volume joins the trial, over 11,000 tonnes of traditional fossil fuels could be replaced with lower-carbon alternatives, reducing 10,000 tonnes of CO₂.

This initiative underscores DP World’s commitment to advancing sustainable shipping solutions. As explained by DP World:

“This programme offers importers a practical pathway to reduce the carbon intensity of their supply chains while supporting the global transition to lower-carbon marine fuels.”

Participation and Benefits

Registered cargo owners receive their carbon inset credits quarterly, directly assigned via the 123Carbon platform. Credits are retired before issuance, ensuring emissions reductions are realized. Importers must register by December 31, 2024, to take advantage of this innovative programme.

DP World’s Carbon Inset Programme reflects a broader push toward greener global shipping practices, setting a new benchmark for reducing Scope 3 emissions in the logistics industry.
