Malaysia on 28 July became the latest country to apply to join the Brics group of emerging economies.
Prime minister Anwar Ibrahim announced the application during a two-day visit to Malaysia by Russia’s foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov. The Malaysian foreign ministry said in a statement that Lavrov had given assurances that Russia would back the application.
